About the PJC

The Pan American Judo Confederation (PJC) is composed of the National Judo Federations of the Americas. Each National Federation must be recognized by its Olympic Committee as the sole official federation representing its country before international sports bodies, and this Olympic Committee must, in turn, be recognized as such by the International Olympic Committee.

The PJC is made up of 32 national judo federations/associations, and the IJF recognizes the PJC as one of the five continental judo unions.

The growth and development of judo worldwide has made the creation of Continental Unions necessary in order to implement the policies of the International Judo Federation and the International Olympic Committee.

Professor Jigoro Kano created judo in 1882 as an educational method derived from martial arts. Judo is a highly codified sport that enables intelligent physical expression and thus contributes to the education of its practitioners. Beyond competition and combat, judo is characterized by a pursuit of technical perfection, the practice of katas, self-defense training, physical preparation, and spiritual development. The Master who created judo envisioned it as an essentially modern and progressive activity, a discipline rooted in ancient traditions.

Olympic Sport

By organizing the Kodokan and establishing the rules of judo, Prof. Kano became the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee in 1909 and worked tirelessly to promote judo around the world. Judo became an official event at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964, supported by judo fans and sports promoters from across the globe.
